According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, one in every two people between the ages of 52 and 64
has a cataract. At the age of 75, almost everyone has a cataract.
What are Cataracts?
A cataract is the clouding of the crystalline lens of the eye. This disrupts the transmission of light to the
retina, which creates a blurred or "foggy" image.
What Causes Cataracts?
Cataracts are often caused by the natural aging process, where chemical changes within the protein of the
lens cause clouding and a yellowish brown discoloration. Cataracts may also be be caused by injury to the
eye, inherited tendencies, disease, birth defects, poor nutrition and certain drugs.
There is also growing evidence that exposure to ultraviolet light (UV), sunlight and cigarette smoke may speed cataract development.
This is why we recommend good glasses and sunglasses with a UV coating, as supplied by Media Eye Works.
Symptoms of Cataracts
- Blurred or "foggy vision"
- Sudden but brief improvement in near vision, allowing reading without glasses
- Difficulty driving at night
- Double or multiple vision
- Light sensitivity
Treatment of Cataracts
A comprehensive eye examination is required to determine the diagnosis. Two options are available if cataracts are diagnosed:
- Prescription glasses: In the initial stages prescription glasses can improve sight, but over time cataracts may become too dense for prescription eyewear.
- Surgery: During surgery the clouded lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens known as an intraocular lens implant. Eyes are operated on
separately, and usually the most impared eye is done first to allow adequate vision during healing.
