| Dry Eye
Dry eye is a condition caused by a shortage of
tear production by the tear glands in the eyelid.
Symptoms
Symptoms include irritation, burning, itching,
or a feeling like something is in the eye. Damage to the surface of
the eye increases discomfort and sensitivity to bright light. The
condition can be worsened by activities with a reduced amount of blinking --
such as reading, watching television, or working on a computer. They
can also be worse in dusty, smoky, or dry areas such as airplanes, shopping
malls, or air conditioned areas. Certain drugs can also worsen these
symptoms. Symptoms improve in humid environments -- such as rainy days
and the shower.
Treatment
When diagnosed by a dry eye specialist the condition can be treated by artificial tear drops or a humidifier.
