FAQs
How Nearsighted, Farsighted or Astigmatic Are You?
The sharpness or clarity of your vision is dependent on the shape of your cornea, the
transparent cap covering your iris and pupil. As light enters the eye, the cornea helps focus the incoming image on the retina.
- If you have a cornea that is too steeply curved, distant objects will look blurry, and you are considered nearsighted.
- If your cornea is too flat, you will probably be unable to focus clearly on objects that are close. If that is the case, you are considered farsighted.
- Astigmatism is a condition that can coexist with both near and farsightedness or even exists alone. In this case the cornea has the shape of a football,
and that results in distorted images.
- If you are over 40, wear reading glasses, or suffer from headaches after focusing on near objects, you are experiencing a condition known as presbyopia.
By changing the shape of the cornea with LASIK, most levels of farsightedness and astigmatism can be corrected.
