Macular Degeneration and Glare Center
Macular Degeneration is an eye disease of the retina that lessens the central vision of a patient as we age. Patients with developing Macular Degeneration may notice they need more light to read, or their contrast is lessened.
Patients with Macular Degeneration who wear eyeglasses are strongly urged to have an Anti-Reflective treatment applied to their lenses. Anti-reflective treatments allow approximately 10% more light reach your eye, instead of bouncing off of the eyeglass lens. With 10% more light reaching the eye, you are able to utilize existing light more effectively. This can improve your vision and make your reading activities more comfortable, as well as reducing the amount of light needed.
With contrast sensitivity decreasing as the Macular Degeneration progresses, a yellow or rose tinted lens may help improve contrast and brightness. Media Eye Works recommends our yellow magnetic Chemestrie clip-on to have in times when improved contrast is needed.
In a recent study published by Janet Szlyk, PhD, patients with age related Macular Degeneration who wore iZon eyeglass lenses reported better contrast sensitivity and clarity for distance, and faster reading times for their reading tasks, particularly in low light conditions.
Complaints about glare and difficulty with starburst and halos have been on the rise in recent years. Many patients, young and old, mention how the glare is bothersome to their eyes and makes life’s activities more bothersome and dangerous.
An anti- reflective treatment is always recommended to reduce the glare form night tiem driving, computer screens, and televisions. Glasses without an anti reflective treatment often tire the eyes during computer and driving activities because light is bouncing off of the lens and directed into the eye. The anti reflective treatment allows light to reach the eye instead of bouning off the lenses. Which means a more comfortable and glare free vision.
The most effective way to reduce glare is by using the iZon Wavefront lenses. The iZon lenses measure the surface of your eye, and correct for the normal imperfections you may have. With this additional correction, headlights have significantly reduced starbursts, halos, and glare. Only the iZon brand lenses measure your individual eye and correct for more than just your prescription. Along with greatly reducing glare and uncomfortable vision, the iZon lenses improve the clarity of your vision day and night. They are often referred to by patients as "high definition lenses." Just like high definition televisions make the picture clearer, sharper, and more vivid, vision through iZon lenses is clearer and sharper.
