Nearsightedness
The most common refractive error is myopia, or nearsightedness. This is a condition in which light rays focus before reaching the retina.
Distance vision is blurred but not reading vision, hence the name "nearsightedness."
Nearsightedness is treated with eyeglasses, contact lenses, or LASIK laser
vision correction.
Farsightedness
Hyperopia, or farsightedness, is caused when the rays of light are focused
behind the retina. If this is not severe, the eye muscles can usually correct
this problem automatically. Around the age of 40, the natural aging process
causes the muscles to weaken and no longer correct the problem, so either
glasses or contact lenses are required. Farsighted people can also be candidates
for LASIK laser vision correction.
Trouble Reading after Age 40
Do you suffer from "shrinking arm syndrome?" This is a normal condition known as presbyopia. If you are close to 40
you may have noticed that it is not as easy to read as it used to be. This occurs when the lens of your eye becomes less flexible
with age, and consequently you find it more difficult to focus on close objects, develop headaches when doing close work and hold reading materials at arm's length.
There is no need to worry: the dedicated vision specialists at Mielcarek Eye Associates and Media Eye Works have a
variety of solutions to help you see better. You can choose from progressive no-line bifocals or bifocal contact lenses.
We want to help you continue to enjoy everything in your life.
